Er ist Teil der 2010 neu gegründeten Submarke BMW i und das erste Großserienfahrzeug mit einer Fahrgastzelle aus Carbon (CFK). Als Antrieb dient ein Elektromotor mit 125 kW (170 PS). Die Reichweite im genormten Fahrzyklus beträgt 190 km. Optional wird zur Erhöhung der Reichweite ab 2014 ein mit Benzin betriebener Range Extender mit 25 kW (34 PS) verfügbar sein.
