Das Unternehmen wurde am 7. März 1916 als Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (BFW) in München gegründet und konzentrierte sich ursprünglich auf die Herstellung von Flugmotoren. Am 21. Juli 1917 wurde das Unternehmen dann in Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH umbenannt, 1918 erfolgte die Umfirmierung zur Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. Seit 1923 stellt das Unternehmen auch Motorräder her, 1928 kam die Automobilherstellung hinzu.
